  • Rolling with Pneumatic Casters

When discussing casters and wheels, we commonly hear the keywords “quiet”, “shock absorbing”, and “ease of use”. However, pneumatic casters and wheels best represent these keywords.

Pneumatic casters offer many advantages for outdoor use: the air or foam-filled wheels easily ride over grass, gravel, and small obstructions like pebbles and rocks. The air filled wheels provide supreme shock absorption, while the foam-filled wheels offer heavier load capacities.

A tough rubber tread provides firm traction in wet and muddy conditions, making it easy to grip on to almost any surface. The wide footprint also prevents the wheel from sinking into soft ground and provides smooth rollability over obstructions and while turning.

Pneumatic casters and wheels are also good for indoor use in places such as hospitals, scientific and electronic laboratories, hotels, department stores and TV or movie studios. Basically anywhere, indoors or out, these casters roll quietly and with ease.

CasterDepot offers high quality pneumatic casters and wheels from several of our reputable partners like Albion and Hamilton as well as more economically priced selections.

  • CasterDepot supports U of M’s solar team

CasterDepot recently donated casters to the University of Michigan’s Solar Car Team with hopes that the car (named Infinium) would go on to win another championship.

Before donating the casters, CasterDepot needed to learn more about the application. The Solar Team needed the casters for carts that would transport Infinium around the shop and during competitions. With more than 1 million dollars invested in Infinium, the casters should be reliable for travel (Infinium races nationally as well as internationally) and the casters also needed to reduce vibrations due to the precise design of the car.

CasterDepot ended up supplying the carts with Colson Performa casters. These strong, reputable casters provide a quiet smooth ride, while also leaving the shop floor mark-free. At that time, Infinium weighed around 320 pounds, which is easily within range of the Performa’s 600 pound carrying capacity.

U of M’s Solar Car Team is an entirely student-run organization that designs and builds solar electric vehicles. Since its establishment in 1990, the team has built 11 vehicles, won the American Solar Challenge 7 times, and placed 3rd in the World Solar Challenge 4 times. The team is recognized as the most successful team in North America.

CasterDepot is proud to support the endeavors of our future generations. Infinium went on to place 3rd in the World Solar Challenge, and the casters still transport the car around the world to this day.

  • Stainless Steel Casters

How do your casters hold over time? If you see rust, corrosion, or faults of different kinds, then look to stainless steel casters for a solution.

A truly versatile product, stainless steel casters remain a favorite in the caster industry. Their durability, non-corrosiveness, and excellent sanitation qualities suit many different applications in many different environments. These casters withstand harsh conditions with minimal deterioration.

CasterDepot highly recommends 2 different stainless steel casters. Colson’s 4 Series Stainless (pictured upper left) is available in a variety of sizes and options. This high-end product offers a truly robust and rugged design, while protecting your sanitation requirements.

For a slightly smaller stainless steel caster, the Jarvis 30-s (pictured lower right) is also available in a variety of sizes and options. We recommend this product for applications that require smaller carrying capacities than the Colson 4 Series Stainless, but both offer durable, long-lasting qualities that stay remarkably clean on wash down applications.

Designed to carry heavy loads, these casters stay fresh as the day you bought them. For that reason, CasterDepot recommends these casters for heavy-duty work as well as the pharmaceutical and food service industries.

Stainless steel casters can be outfitted with many types of wheels, including phenolic, polyurethane, and polyolefin. Contact us today to find out more about these remarkably strong and clean casters!

  • Stay clean with antimicrobial wheels

What are antimicrobial wheels and how can they improve your home or business?

Antimicrobial wheels are designed to suppress the growth of a variety of destructive and odor causing microbes such as bacteria, molds, mildew, and fungi. The active microbial agent neutralize the growth of microbes.

The antimicrobial agent is not on the surface of the wheel, but rather the agent remains stored in the wheel material. For that reason, the antimicrobial properties last the life of the caster, and hold up to chips, abrasion and scratches. Even tread wear and wax buildup does not adversely affect the antimicrobial agent.

Not only does the antimicrobial agent last the entire life of the caster, it's also safe to use in many different environments that require absolute sanitation. The active agent that makes the wheels antimicrobial have undergone extensive testing. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approve the use of this material in sanitation environments, as well as other regulatory authorities around the world such as the European Union (EU) and the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF).

For more than 25 years, the agent has been used in hospitals and similar medical settings and remains popular in the food industry and other clean industrial environments. Although the wheels specialize in sanitation, they also suit many other industries because they operate well in harsh environments and resist damage from water, chemicals, solvents, and petroleum products.

These durable, non-marking, wheels maintain a low rolling resistance and also roll much quieter than hard plastic.

  • Upgrading Shady Oaks

Executive Director of Shady Oaks Camp, Scott Steele, wrote to CasterDepot, “On behalf of the Parents Association for Cerebral Palsy Children and Shady Oaks Camp, I would like to sincerely thank you for your generous donation of new wheels for our camp hospital beds.”

Shady Oaks Camp is a nonprofit camp founded to help children and adults with cerebral palsy. Established in 1947, the camp provides 8 weeks of camping each summer, including many outdoor programs as well as a variety of life-enriching activities that support and enhance the camper’s overall quality of life.

old-wheel-1A few years ago, Shady Oaks received some hospital beds as a donation, but the beds needed wheels—desperately. Corroded, rusted, and with separated treads, the wheels no longer functioned and even damaged the floor during use.

Too lucrative to turn down and in need of the hospital beds, the camp simply couldn’t afford to replace all of the wheels and at the same time accomplish all the financial goals for the year. So CasterDepot decided to donate new wheels for the 20+ hospital beds.

Scott Steele offered more perspective on the topic, “Our parents work extremely hard to raise funds to pay for camp operations throughout the year and there is simply not a large amount of money available for capital improvements or new equipment. Your donation not only saved us money on new wheels, but also will help preserve our remodeled buildings that volunteers work so hard to complete.”

Upgrading Shady Oaks Camp remains a highlight of the year for CasterDepot. Not only is it for a good cause, but the floors were saved as well.

  • Employee Spotlight: Bill Gladstone

Bill’s been told for years that he looks like Michael Rapaport, an actor that gained fame in the 1980′s. Perhaps by no chance at all, Bill’s favorite music, film, and artists also come from the 80′s.

Eddy Money, “The Goonies”, and “Don’t Stop Believin” by Journey  top his list of favorites. After 8 years at CasterDepot, Bill now has 3 more years with CasterDepot than his favorite show lasted on TV, “Sanford and Son”.

So how does Bill stay in the same shape as he was in the 80′s? By maintaining healthy hobbies and a good family life. Regarding his hobbies, Bill says, “I enjoy coaching my son Jonathan’s travel youth Football and Basketball teams, and spending every moment I have with my two amazing kids.”

Among his favorite CasterDepot memories, he lists CasterDepot’s 30th Anniversary and the CasterDepot staff’s visit to Albion Caster College. What does he like most about his job? Being able to interact with people on a daily basis.

Graduating high school in 3 years makes Bill an expert on graduating high school in 3 years. That’s in addition to his expertise in casters of course. After all, Bill’s favorite quote is, ”we are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit” ~Aristotle

    Favorite CasterDepot interaction
One of our vendors’ AR person is a favorite of mine. She calls for payment information–she is very brisk and business like quite terse in fact. When I give her the information she says, “Now that that is done, guess what my dogs did last week?” and tells me everything that has happened since I last talked to her. I have never met her, but I do wonder what she looks like.

    Interesting fact about Penny
In 1971, my boyfriend (later my husband) was drafted and I hitch-hiked to California to see him graduate from the Marine Corps. It took 5 days and he was very upset at me–I took a plane back. Later in 1975, I enlisted in the Army. He didn’t hitch-hike to see me graduate, but he did drive with my daughter and they watched me graduate.

What Penny likes most about her job…
I love paying bills!! It is very satisfying to see the balances go down. Also, I like to resolve problems and correct mistakes. The people I work with here at CasterDepot are very important to me, and I appreciate how hard they all work to achieve our common goals.

    Penny’s favorite TV show/film
NCIS is my favorite TV show, I love Mark Harmon. My favorite movie is, “The Outlaw Josey Wales.” Our family motto is: “Endeavor to Persevere.” My girls and I live by that.

    Penny’s family life
