Picking the perfect cabinet casters for your DIY project

A cabinet that is capable of being moved freely from place to place saves time, energy, and your back. Furniture that is easily moved simply makes living and working easier. Whether you are planning to convert your home, garage or warehouse cabinets from stationary to mobile, or you are building your own furniture from scratch, today’s caster solutions are extensive. In fact, the possibilities actually make cabinet caster and wheel selection a bit confusing. Consider the following tips for your DIY cabinet projects.

Start With the Insert/Socket

When you are preparing to install a caster to the bottom of an existing cabinet, there are likely holes in the bottom of the legs. If you are creating a project from scratch, you may need to drill holes. This is where inserts and sockets come in. Inserts and sockets are designed to support the caster when it is attached to the object being mobilized. In order to find the correct insert or socket for your cabinetry or other equipment, you need to consider the weight of the load, the shape and size required of the hole to be filled and the caster stem type and dimensions.

For more information on inserts and sockets, read our blog about mobilizing your DIY project with inserts and/or sockets, and contact us to go over your project's specifications.

Caster Options for Cabinets

Once you have identified the correct insert or socket that you'll need, the difficulty in selecting the a caster is extremely simplified. As long as you order a caster that has the same stem style and size as required by your insert or socket, you're golden. You can select a caster with a metal wheel to support weight if that is what you need. If you need your cabinets to be low to the ground, pick out casters that have a small wheel diameter. If you are still unsure about which casters will fit your inserts or sockets, read up on this older blog of ours that discusses common types stem casters and how to measure them.
