  • Rig Types

     

    Standard swivel rigs rely on a bolt or kingpin to hold the upper and lower raceways together. Designed to rotate 360, standard swivel rigs can respond immediately to changes in direction.

     

     

     

     

     

    Kingpinless swivel rigs use load bearings to hold the outer and inner raceways together. The ergonomic design reduces caster failure and allows for heavier loads, more abusive applications, and higher towing speed.

     

     

     

     

     

     

    Precision swivel (maintenance free) rigs never require preventative maintenance.  Because debris is kept out of the bearing, precision swivel rigs last longer and reduce downtime. They are an excellent choice for ergonomic and towline applications.

     

     

     

     

    Rigid rigs are excellent for straight-line travel.  They can typically hold more weight than equivalently sized swivel rigs and are often used in conjunction with swivel rigs to allow directional change.

  • Common Wheel Materials

    A wheel’s construction has a big impact on its functionality and applicability.  Often one material is used for the tread (portion of the wheel that makes contact with the ground) and another for the hub (portion of the wheel that provides structural integrity). Sometimes a wheel’s tread and hub are constructed of the same material.

    Let’s take a quick look at some of the more common categories of wheel treads…

     

     

     

    Polyurethane wheels offer great floor protection, water tolerance, and chemical/oil resistance.

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

    Metal wheels reject debris, can tolerate high temperatures, and offer high load capacities.

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

    Nylon wheels perform well in wet conditions, resist chemicals/oils, and are rated for a wide variety of temperatures.

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

    Rubber wheels are floor protective, quiet, and resist debris.

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

    Phenolic wheels are easy rolling, offer high load capacities and resist chemicals/oils.

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

    Polyolefin wheels tolerate water/steam, resist chemicals/oils, and are economical.

     

     

     

     

     

     

  • Common Caster Mounting Options

    There are a wide variety of caster mounting options available. Let’s take a closer look at the most common.

     

     

    Top plates are characterized by a flat mounting surface, most commonly square or rectangular.  Pre-drilled bolt holes allow for easy attachment.  Top plates can also be welded directly to the object or secured using quick release caster pads.

     

     

     

     

     

    Threaded stems come in many diameters, lengths and pitches. They are available in standard, metric and pipe thread configurations.  Threaded stems are often a good choice when there is limited space that prevents a top plate from being used.

     

     

     

     

     

    Grip ring stems feature a small friction ring. They are commonly found on mop bucket casters and office chair casters.

     

     

     

     

     

     

    Grip neck stems are  typically used with a plastic or metal socket.  They are commonly used when attaching casters to wooden furniture or for DIY projects

     

     

     

     

     

     

    Round stems fit into a round tube. They are heavy-duty stems that are often used on outdoor construction equipment, like scaffolding.

     

     

     

     

     

     

    Square stems are similar in function to round stems, however, they fit into square tubes.

     

     

     

     

     

     

    Expanding adapter stems are designed for use in hollow tubing.  They feature threaded stems that are fitted with an expanding adapter assembly. By rotating the caster raceway, the assembly expands to fit snugly in the tubing.

     

     

     

     

     

    Also known as “hollow kingpin” or “hole-in-head”, this is a stemless design with a hole on the top of the mounting surface. The mounting surface is positioned against the object, after which a fastener like a screw or bolt is driven through the hole and into the object.

  • Common Top Plate Caster Types

    At a 30,000 foot level, there are two main categories of plate casters: swivel and rigid.  Swivel casters are further divided by the way the rig’s raceway is constructed.  Let’s take a closer look at the most common types.

     

     

    Kingpin - Kingpin casters rely on a kingpin to hold the upper and lower raceways together. Designed to rotate 360°, they can respond immediately to changes in direction. Kingpin casters are a great choice if working in tight spaces or when maneuverability is needed.

     

     

     

     

     

     

    Kingpinless casters rely on load bearings to hold the outer and inner raceways together rather than on a traditional kingpin. The ergonomic kingpinless design reduces caster failure and allows for heavier loads, more abusive applications, and higher towing speeds.

     

     

     

     

     

     

    Maintenance free rigs feature sealed precision ball bearings that never require preventative maintenance. And because debris is kept out of the upper bearing, maintenance free casters often last longer and reduce downtime. They offer a smooth, consistent swivel, and can be an excellent choice for both towline and ergonomic applications.

     

     

     

     

     

     

    Rigid casters are fixed (do not rotate).  They are excellent for straight-line travel and can typically hold more weight than equivalently sized swivel casters.  Rigid casters are often used in conjunction with swivel casters to allow directional change.

  • Caster Anatomy 101

    While all casters are definitely not the same, most are an assembly of common parts, or components.  The variations (or specializations) of the components are what affect performance, capabilities and attributes.  Let’s take a ten thousand foot view of the most common caster components.

     

     

     

     

    Rigs attach to a cart or equipment using a specific mounting option.  Mounting options are most commonly a top plate or a type of stem. Rigs also hold the wheel, brake or other caster options in place.  Rigs can be stationary (rigid) or can allow rotation (swivel).  Some are designed to support ergonomic applications.  Some rigs are designed to reduce maintenance. Some are designed to support heavy loads, etcetera.  The possibilities are endless!

     

     

     

     

     

    Wheels can be single-piece construction or can have a tread that is attached to a hub of a different material.  The attributes and applicability of a wheel are largely dependent on its composition and shape.  Some wheels are designed to protect floors.  Some can tolerate extreme temperatures.  Still others can be used in environments where there is chemical exposure.  For just about every application, there is a wheel type that will work perfectly!

     

     

     

     

     

    Bearings assist in the rollability of the wheel.  The type of bearing that is chosen will impact the capabilities of the caster.  Some bearings are appropriate for washdowns, while others work well in towline applications.  Still others are designed to reduce noise and so on!

     

     

     

     

     

     

    Brakes prevent a wheel from rolling and in some cases, also prevent the caster from rotating.  Not all casters have brakes.  Like other caster components, there are many styles and variations.  The type of brake that should be used is highly dependent on the application.
